BOOK SIGNING

THE GARDEN OF ART VIC CICANSKY SCULPTOR

BY DON KERR

Victor Cicansky and Don Kerr will be signing the new release from the University Calgary Press, The Garden of Art, at the Susan Whitney Gallery on Thursday, October 28, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. To accompany the launch of the new release the Whitney Gallery will have an exhibit and sale of Cicansky’s deluxe ceramic books.

For over forty years Vic Cicansky has been creating sculptures that are whimsical, elegant, surreal, and above all, profoundly unique.

Part biography and part journalism, The Garden of Art does not burden the reader with jargon-riddled critical analysis and lets Cicansky’s distinctive brand of art speak for itself. Considering aspects of Cicansky’s life that have most influenced his art, from his childhood as the son of poor Romanian immigrants growing up in East Regina, to his pivotal art school sojourn at Davis, California in the 1960's, as well as his grassroots politics and passion for gardening, this is a compelling portrait of a distinctive Canadian artist.

This first book-length treatment of his work is not only an excellent introduction to those new to Cicansky, but also includes valuable and incisive background material to those already familiar with his work. With fascinating descriptions of Cicansky’s studio and his creative methods, along with a wealth of colour photographs, The Garden of Art chronicles the life and times of a truly original artist.

Don Kerr is a prominent western Canadian writer who has published plays, poetry, and short stories in addition to editing the literary magazines GRAIN and NeWest Review. Most recently he has taught drama in the English Department at the University of Saskatchewan.
